The first domesticated cats appeared in ancient Egypt about 3,600 BC. These cats were revered by the Egyptians and were often mummified and buried with their owners to keep them company in the afterlife. Cats were also thought to be magical creatures and were believed to have the power to protect against evil spirits.

Cats spread from Egypt to other parts of the world as trading ships carried them to new locations. Eventually, cats made their way to Europe where they became popular pets among the wealthy. It wasn't until the 1800s that cats became more common in average households thanks to increased trade and travel.

Today, there are an estimated 600 million domestic cats in homes all over the globe. Cats have retained their reputation as being independent creatures, but they are also known for their affectionate nature towards their human companions. Whether you're a cat person or not, there's no denying that these animals have made a big impact on our lives throughout history.
